International Women's Day is a world-wide celebration of the contributions of women to our everyday lives. As part of #IWD2020, I had the honor of participating in a panel organized by Rachelle Suissa of Dare to with wonderfully powerful women running for office in New York City. The panel was held at the The Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender, Community Center in the Village.
The panelist included women from almost every borough in NYC -Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and THE BRONX!!!!! The women as shown in the photo include Shirley Paul, candidate for City Council District 46(BK); Felisha Singh, Candidate for City Council District 32(Queens); Sara Lind, Interim ED of 21 for 21 and candidate for CIty Council District 6 (Manhattan); Rachelle Suissa, founder of Dare to Run; Chivona Renee Newsome, Candidate for Congressional District 15 (BX); Ischia Bravo, Candidate City Council District 15 (BX) and me!
The conversation ranged from why the participants are running for office, the challenges of being a woman/outsider and the balance between the intensity of being in the public eye and protecting ones' family. I discussed my own experience running for office as a pregnant woman, the importance of bringing one's whole self to the public debate and its lasting impact to future candidates.
Thank you again, Dare to Run for the safe space to discuss our issues!
